Message to the Community

Posted Date: 5/08/25 (1:03 PM)

Dear BPS Community:

Please see the message below, which I read during my appointment as Bristol Superintendent of Schools during last night's Board of Education meeting. It is an honor to continue serving the community in this role, and I am grateful for all the support, kind words, and congratulations I have received.

First and foremost, I express my deepest gratitude to the Board of Education for placing your trust in me. I am incredibly honored to be chosen to lead this remarkable district, and I do not take this responsibility lightly.   I also want to thank my family, mentors, and colleagues—past and present—who have helped shape me into the leader I am today.  I would also like to thank Dr. Carbone, who accepted me as her intern and supported my appointment as Acting Superintendent last year.

I recognize that my selection comes at a time when there have been differences of opinion among the Board and in the community. I want to acknowledge and respect all members' perspectives— those who supported my appointment and those who had reservations. Your voices matter, and I take the responsibility of earning and keeping your trust seriously.  I am here to lead with humility, transparency, and a deep respect for the diversity of thought in our board, staff, and community. My commitment to unity is unwavering, and I am confident we can work together to improve our district.

To the educators, staff, family members, students, and community members of Bristol Public Schools: this is not just a new chapter for me—it is a shared journey that we will walk together.  The significance of my appointment as the first black female superintendent and the special place of pride that many people of all races may feel because of it is not lost on me.  I believe that strong schools are the heart of a strong community, and my mission is to ensure that every student, regardless of background or socioeconomic status, has access to a high-quality, equitable, and engaging education. Your involvement and support are crucial in this journey.

I aim to improve outcomes, uplift voices, foster unity, and ensure that every decision reflects our highest aspirations for our children. With this commitment, I am confident that we can make significant strides in the quality of education and the overall well-being of our students.

Let us boldly and bravely acknowledge the challenges and opportunities ahead. With passion and purpose, we will work together to overcome these challenges and build a brighter future for our students and community.

Thank you once again for this incredible honor. I am deeply committed to our shared journey and Bristol Public Schools' success. Let’s get to work, united in our mission to provide the best education for our students.

In partnership,
Iris White
