Superintendent's Weekly Update- September 21, 2025

Posted Date: 9/22/25 (8:00 PM)

Dear BPS Community:
This is a reminder that all Bristol Public Schools will be closed on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, in observance of Rosh Hashanah.

Have a great week,
Iris White
Superintendent of Schools

Touching Reunion: I had the honor and pleasure of witnessing the reunion of Bristol Preparatory Academy teacher Mr. Ed Mungeon and his former student, Neci Kalisz.  Mr. Mungeon and Ms. Kalisz had not seen each other in ten years.  Ms. Kalisz had reached out to me to share what Mr. Mungeon's guidance, care, and mentoring had meant to her and hundreds of students like her over the span of Mr. Mungeon's decades of teaching. Her story reminds us of the powerful bonds that can form between us and our students, and how our positive influence can alter the trajectory of their lives.  Thank you, Ed.  Your ability to connect with, support, and inspire your students has not only transformed their lives but has also set a standard for excellence that others can aspire to.

Operation Safe Crossing: I would like to remind everyone of the importance of staying alert and cautious on the roads. Children walk on sidewalks, cross streets, and board buses every day. Their safety depends on each of us doing our part.  The Bristol Police Department has posted the following message as a reminder to drivers and pedestrians on safe crossings.  Violations for failing to yield to pedestrians can lead to fines and points on your driver's license.

The Bristol Police Department wants to remind drivers and pedestrians to follow Connecticut Law relating to Crosswalks and Road Use and to pay attention when approaching crosswalks.  Our officers will be focusing their enforcement efforts as part of this initiative over the next several weeks.

Attendance Awareness Month:  Good attendance = strong habits, lasting friendships, and bright futures.
We’re here to support families in making school a place where every child feels welcomed and ready to learn.
Together, we can build a culture of showing up!

Statewide Dyslexia Awareness Collaborative Kickoff:  Join the CSDE on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, from 5:30-8:00 p.m. for a free in-person event with the "Dyslexia Awareness Collaborative Kickoff - From Awareness to Action: Supporting Learners with Dyslexia." Meet our partners and hear from students about why this campaign is so important to them—featuring inspiring talks and meet-and-greets, giveaways, and more. This event is open to the public, including legislators, teachers, administrators, parents, and students. Please see the attached flyer for more information and to register.

Coffee with the Superintendent: The first Coffee with the Superintendent will be held this Friday, September 26, 2025, from 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at the Bristol Board of Education, 129 Church Street.  To register, please click here: https://forms.gle/FaSxGDn1RQLFdc5Y7.

Congratulations to Dr. Karlene Richardson:   Dr. Karlene Richardson, BPS Health Occupations Teacher at Bristol Central HS and Bristol Eastern HS, is a published author!  Her book, Bridging the Gap:  Jaw-Dropping Approaches in Maintaining Engagement: Lessons I Learned From Transitioning from Professor to High School Teacher, chronicles her journey in learning to maintain student engagement and empowerment.   Student engagement and empowerment are at the heart of our mission to Teach and Learn with Passion and Purpose.  Dr. Richardson's achievement reflects both remarkable professional dedication and a deep commitment to ensuring that students have a voice and feel empowered in their learning.  BPS is fortunate to have such passionate and innovative educators, and this publication will no doubt inspire colleagues and students alike.  Thank you, Dr. Richardson, for helping to lead the way!
